New Breast Reconstruction Techniques

Though donor sites used to be limited to the abdomen and buttocks, recent advancements have opened up natural reconstruction options to more women. These include:

  • Stacked DIEP & GAP Flaps: A “stacked” flap uses tissue from both sides of the abdomen (stacked DIEP) or from both buttocks (stacked GAP) to reconstruct one breast. This procedure allows women with less excess tissue to have natural breast reconstruction after mastectomy.
  • ICAP & TDAP Flaps: The ICAP (Intercostal Artery Perforator) flap uses tissue from the underarm area to reconstruct the breasts, while tissue is taken from the upper back at the bra line to form the TDAP (Thoracodorsal Artery Perforator) flap. These flaps are smaller than DIEP or GAP flaps, so they are often used during revision surgeries to fix deformities of the reconstructed or natural breast. These flaps can also reconstruct partial defects resulting from lumpectomy procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a good candidate for a stacked DIEP or GAP flap procedure?

There are a number of factors that our surgeons keep in mind when helping patients select a procedure. Body shape and tissue availability, as well are your expectations and preferences as a patient, are all important considerations. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your situation and provide you with the best options available for your specific needs.

Will I have visible scars after ICAP or TDAP flap reconstruction?

Though all flap-based reconstruction surgeries involve incisions, which will result in some scarring, our team of experienced surgeons strives to minimize the visibility of scars by placing incisions strategically. Over time, scars tend to fade and can be further reduced with scar management techniques.

Will my insurance cover TDAP and ICAP flap breast reconstruction near me?

At The Center for Natural Breast Reconstruction, we're proud to accept insurance plans for most major providers in our area. Thanks to the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), most group insurance plans that cover mastectomies are also required to cover breast reconstruction surgery. We advise our patients to contact their insurance provider before scheduling an appointment to discuss coverage and costs.
